The Benefits of Planting Trees

The economic and environmental benefit of trees can be both direct and indirect. Direct benefits to you, the homeowner, are usually associated with energy costs. Air conditioning costs are lower in a tree-shaded home and heating costs are reduced when a home has a windbreak. Trees are also a wise investment as they increase the value of your property over time. Landscaped homes are more valuable than non-landscaped homes.

Indirect economic benefits of trees are even greater. Customers pay lower electrical bills when power companies are able to use less water in their cooling towers, build fewer new facilities to meet the peak demands, use reduced amounts of fossil fuel in their furnaces, and use fewer measures to control air pollution. These savings may be small for a home owner, but huge for your community.

Environmentally, trees improve air quality, conserve water, and give animals a safe place to live. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particulates. Rain then washes the pollutants to the ground. Leaves also absorb carbon dioxide from the air to form carbohydrates that are used in the plant’s structure and function. In turn, they give off oxygen which, of course, is important for all living things.
